I often heard people complaining that there was not good self build information online relating to Ireland and UK, so I decided to create that presence.

Housebuilder.ie will provide you with information on every aspect of self building a house in Ireland and UK.  Even if you are not a self builder, but want to educate yourself before speaking with a building contractor, HouseBuilder.ie is the place to do it.  This way you can let the builder know you are fully aware of what they are talking about,….. and more importantly, that they will not pull the wool over your eyes!!

Designing and building a house (or self building for those that are brave enough) is one of the most important things you will do throughout your life.  And although we become full of excitement and want to get stuck into it as soon as possible, I cannot stress enough how we should take our time and think and plan the process out properly.  This time and effort will give you so much more enjoyment throughout your lifetime, rather than wishing you had done things differently, or regretting not making certain changes!!

The bottom line is, we are all human beings and will make mistakes, or regret certain aspects being included or not included within our self build house, but if we can keep these mistakes to a minimum, this will be regarded as time well spent.  We all know someone who, after spending some time living in their new self build house, makes comments like “I should have made that utility room bigger”, “Our under floor heating takes forever to heat the house, we should have installed radiators”, “Our living area is too large, it always looks so empty”, “that hallway is wasted space” ….etc.  Therefore, to avoid you making these comments, or similar, yourself in the coming years do the research now and have less regrets.

We will bring you through each aspect of self building from choosing a site, designing the house and the different construction methods to total completion, but one thing I would ask you to keep in mind throughout all decisions is Design the House around your lifestyle!!

aaaaaToo often I see people opting for certain items because a friend or neighbour has this and thinks it brilliant, which it may well be……..for them.  But in many cases what is brilliant for them may not be brilliant for you because you have different lifestyles and live in the house differently.  A quick example of this is a heating system.  I have friends who have children and the lady of the house is at home with the children every day.  They have under floor heating in the house, which stays on constantly at a low temperature and proves very economical.  They are always singing the praises of under floor heating because, for them, it provides exactly what they want.  Another couple, also friends, having listened to how wonderful under floor heating is, decided when building their self build house they 100% must include it, not up for negotiation!! This couple do not have children, they are both very career driven and work long hours each day away from home.  It does not make sense for them to have the heat on all day as they do not return until late in the evening, and at differing times.  Over time they have realised the under floor heating was not the best option to suit their lifestyle.  A more responsive heating system, which can be turned on late in the evening to heat the house in a short time frame would have been a much better option in this instance.  So the lesson in this example is, although under floor heating is a wonderful invention, depending on how you live in your house, it may not be the best option for you.  This is just one of many aspects which needs a little consideration before rushing into things.

Throughout this informative self builders website we will provide useful information for you with regard to house building.
